In 2005, an open source platform was created for students in Ivrea, Italy who needed a robust and affordable way to test electronic designs. The Arduino IDE is a cross-platform application written in Java and derived from Processing. Created with simplicity and accessibility in mind, the Arduino is capable of communicating with a wide variety of electronic devices. This makes it much easier to introduce electronics to a wider range of users of all skill levels.

The Arduino has been integrated into everything from robots to digital art and has steadily grown in popularity during it's short lifespan. All of the reference materials and software to begin using the Arduino are available for free online thanks to a large community of Arduino hackers.
